Based on a short story "Intimidation (ある脅迫)" written by Takigawa Kyō(多岐川恭), the film is a crime drama (film noir), which focuses on the relationship between the protagonist (Nichimura Akira 西村晃) and the antagonist (Kaneko Nobuo 金子信雄). Both man have been friends since childhood and work for the same bank. The antagonist is a deputy branch manager while the protagonist works as a plain clerk. Both men get along well on the surface, but they despise each other deep indide. One day bank robbery takes place. The protagonist comes to know by intuition that the robber is actually the antagonist---the deputy manager. Sensing that the clerk finds out his identity, the deputy manager suddenly changes his mind and tells all the clerks that this is a precautionary security training. The deputy manager has been intimidated by a Japanese gangster (ヤクザ) who demands money. In due course the manager kills the gangster by accident, which the protagonist comes to know. And what will happen in the end? This is actually a psycological drama with a bit of black humour rather than a mere crime story.

A nice, 1960 black and white wide screen short crime drama from Japan. A lot of intimidation goes on in a story of a bank executive being blackmailed for embezzlement. While most American film noir films take place in the dark, shadowy wet streets of urban America, this crime drama takes place largely in well-lit offices. It's great that this film is now available for American audiences.
